Jakob is awesome with sharing quality things for us to enjoy and learn from. From him again: This is from a larger work called ,"The Three Nocturnes" composed by Daniel Elder at the age of 19. The first nocturne is shown here, "The Ballade of the Moon" which is my favorite out of the 3. I hope and wish to sing this work with a large choir one day. Sometimes i seriously just lay down and stare at my ceiling and listen to this masterpiece.

From Jakob: This is the Mephisto waltz by Franz Liszt performed by Khatia Buniatishvili. This is by far one of the craziest piano works to perform, just listen to the intensity! It's so fascinating to watch!
Tuesday, May 19th, 2020
From Mrs. Perez: This is Air on the G String by Bach, performed on the kinds of string instruments they would have used during his time, as well as a portative organ. We talked about this piece in Piano I a little bit this year when the kids asked me what music I included in my wedding ceremony. :)

Last chance to do your quiz for this week! The final exam will start tomorrow!
Hello! I hope you have had an awesome week!
Tomorrow I will post several things. The primary post will be your Final Exam. This post will stay on the website for two weeks and everyone must complete it. There will be a separate exam for Choir and Piano. If you are in both classes, you will need to take both. I will also post our annual Student Choice Awards for you to vote for your peers that you find amazing. I will also share with you the pick-up/drop off schedule. This will be your opportunity to turn in your Choir uniform, any original copies of music you have, and SENIORS will be able to sign our wall by the folder slots. Make sure you are aware of the pick-up/drop off schedule and plan accordingly.
I am so humbled by the number of you that ran for Choir Officer positions. The long list of names on the ballot proves that you guys are dedicated to making our program successful. Thank you to everyone who ran for a position. EVERYONE: Please remember that a leader does not have to have a title. If you want to be a leader in Choir (and we want you to be a leader in Choir), all you have to do lead. Step it up. Set a great example. Encourage others.

Happy Saturday!
I will post results of the officer election on Monday. I will contact 2020-2021 officers before I post.
I love this piece of Baroque music. The orchestral introduction is long for a reason. It was written as a processional and the space is long. It takes a long time for royalty to walk down the aisle.
Which recording do you prefer?

Remember the king singers? We worked with them over at the clarion a few months ago. They've put together something a lot of choir tend to be getting into now called a ,"stay at home choir" This performance along with the piece (And so it goes) is comforting and i hope you enjoy!
Patricia introduced me to group and I realized I have not posted any barbershop groups on this website (at least I don't remember posting any in the past couple months). Enjoy!

TOMORROW IS MASKED SINGER DAY ON ZOOM!!! I promise you do not want to miss that!
It occurred to me that many of you probably have not really heard Mrs. Perez and I sing. I mean, sure, you hear us sing all the time, but I mean REALLY sing. I mean performing highly prepared repertoire that showcases years of training and practice.
Here is a little virtual recital of us!

Today is the last day of campaigning. Tomorrow the voting will start. We will be using the same voting system you are used to using with other school elections (thank you for your help, Mrs. LaRowe!!!). Campaigners: it is in your best interest to encourage your Choir peers to VOTE!!! I think all of us are getting a bit ... lazy... with online learning. Voting is an easy thing for someone NOT to do. Encourage your friends to make their opinions matter. You should vote. It is your civic right and the best way to speak your mind!!! Like something? Vote for it! Don't like something? Vote for something you like!
Any current Choir student is able to cast a ballot - Freshmen through Seniors. I feel strongly that Seniors have the right to help decide the future of the program they helped shape. Plus, Seniors, y'all aren't done yet! You still have 3 more weeks before you are all grown up!

Hello! Last call for anyone interested in competing in out Choir Zoom Masked Singer competition next Thursday. Send me an email and I will get details to you!
During the summer, many of you attend All State Camps at universities around the state. You are probably aware that most of these camps have been canceled, but a few have postponed to the end of July or the beginning of August. I hesitate to encourage you to seek those camps out, but Texas Tech University has created a camp opportunity that I HIGHLY ENCOURAGE. See the video below. Also, the All State music will be available on June 1st. I encourage you to order a copy of music as soon as it is available (I will teach you how to do that later). Also, as soon as practice recordings are available in the summer, I will post those on this website.

Hello!!!
Thank you for all of you who have done your Choir Quiz this week! If you have not yet, DO THAT NOW!!! You can check the officer campaign posts after!
One of the coolest things I have ever gotten to see at ACDA was a performance of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in Utah. INCREDIBLY MOVING. Actually, this was a crazy ACDA experience because Eric Whitacre was also the Honor Choir conductor (the premier of his arrangement of the National Anthem was performed at ACDA by the Honor Choir). Awesome all around. Check out this video of this Choir that is known for being showy with their power in numbers!

Next Thursday we are going to do our own version of The Masked Singer on Zoom. If you would like to be a contestant, email me. If you want to be a contestant, YOU CANNOT TELL ANYONE!!! If you were to tell someone, that would ruin the surprise, now wouldn't it???
I have conducted many musicals and I feel like the conductor often has the best view of the show. I found this video from the conductor's perch at the end of Act 1 of Wicked and I love it!

A note from Aubrey:
Hi choir family!
I hope each and everyone of you are doing well in this weird quarantine business. I miss you all and I hope I will get to see all of your glowing faces soon. I’m sure by now you all know that I am running for President, but that’s not why I’m writing this letter. I’m writing this to reach out to the people I love and miss. I really would love to know how you are all doing, even if we don’t talk on a regular basis I would still love to reach out to you and talk about anything and everything (My Snapchat is @aubrey.drew). I know that quarantine hasn’t made it easy for us to stay in touch and have a social life outside of our houses but one thing I am very thankful for the technology we have. I love getting on Choir zooms when I can and talking to all of you about crazy stuff and just seeing your faces, your smiles it makes me happier than you could imagine. Thank you all for being amazing and being a part of this breathtaking choir. Without you guys there wouldn’t be this wonderful family or home for us to share our lives and story’s with. I adore each and everyone of you guys and I hope we can talk again soon. Thank you for being you and remember, keep moving forward and let people hear the voice that you have inside of you, they need it.

You've probably heard of the Hallelujah Chorus, but did you know that it's only one movement from a larger work? It's from an oratorio (which is kind of like an opera but without the staging and the costumes) called Messiah, by Baroque composer G.F. Handel. The last movement is called Worthy is the Lamb, and it is even more epic than the Hallelujah Chorus, in my opinion! The final section of this movement is a very complex "Amen" that is glorious! Look up "Worthy is the Lamb by Handel" on Youtube--it's truly a choral masterpiece!

Happy Monday! The Choir Quiz link above is new and ready for you to fill out this week. Please know that the question asking you to reflect upon a video you have watched will be on the quiz weekly. If you have not watched one, take care of that before you fill out the form. The posts on the website this week will likely be dominated by campaigning, so you may need to do a youtube search on your own. Try looking up a song you have sung in Choir that you love or simply searching a composer you love (my searches would certainly be "Gloria from the Masque of Anglels" and "Brahms Choral Music"). If you are feeling uninspired with your searching, steal one of my suggestions. Another possibility is looking up Choral music on SoundCloud. For those of you that know Avary (Aaron and Abel's sister), here is a link to her Choir's performance at ACDA in Little Rock this year:

A note from Mia: Hi everyone! Happy Campaign Week! This week is going to be filled with letters, videos, virtual posters and so much more from Choir Officer candidates such as myself. Make sure you’re checking the website everyday so that you can start to decide who you want to vote for! As a two time Choir Officer, this week is always my favorite because candidates are able to announce to other choir members why they would make a great Officer. It’s important to vote wisely because whoever you vote for will be a big part of the decision making process for all things Choir next year! Throughout this week, I will be sharing my ideas and showing you guys why I would make a great Choir President next year. I’d love to speak with all of you guys and hear your opinions for how you think the choir could improve. Feel free to reach out to me! My phone number is (979) 264-7196 and my SnapChat is mia_mintz15 . I’m very excited to generate more ideas with you guys and I can’t wait for the coming year! Have a great week!

Hi everybody! DO MI SO TI RE!!!
So, I sent somewhat of a challenge to those of you running for Choir officer positions to send campaign things and YOU EXCEEDED WHAT I EXPECTED! It is so reassuring that you all are so interested in making next year AWESOME! I am more than willing to post everything you send! I normally finalize the website for tomorrow at about 8pm or 9pm today. I will post things in the order I receive. If you send something to me after I finalize (for all of you that have weird sleeping schedules these days), I will post the next day! Emailing me is fastest for me to get content here, but I have learned all the things with technology so I can likely figure out how to upload anything in any format you send my way.
The voting ballot is finalized and I will post that tomorrow. You will see that the potential for excellence is there.

Jakob shared this link to a live stream performance in honor of Andrew Lloyd Webber's birthday. It's an amazing concert of some of his most famous works! If you didn't know, Andrew Lloyd Webber is the composer of The Phantom of the Opera! This live stream is available until 1:00 PM tomorrow. The YouTube channel it's posted on, The Shows Must Go On, is regularly posting performances during this time of social distancing!

Happy Friday!!! Happy May!!!
Today is the last day to do your Choir Quiz and to apply for officer positions (if you are choosing to apply for officer positions). I will post the ballot for your perusal this coming Monday, May 4th. If you are running for a position or, like many of you, multiple positions, and would like to do some campaigning in this election, please send me things to post on this website. I will start posting those things tomorrow. Please know that in my experiences, campaigning for Choir Officer positions has shown a direct correlation to who gets elected. We will campaign starting tomorrow until next weekend. The following Monday, May 11th, I will open the polls for voting. All who are running should familiarize themselves with the officer handbook. I posted the handbook this past Monday, April 27th.

Wolfgang was VERY excited about going for a walk!
Hey you guys, it's Mrs. Perez! I wanted to share with y'all one of the most influential singers in my life, legendary jazz icon, Ella Fitzgerald. I grew up listening to recordings of her because my parents love jazz music, and her voice had a huge impact on me as a young singer. She is widely considered to be one of the best singers of all time. People are in awe of her vocal technique and control, as well as her incredibly warm, pure tone. In fact, she is often called The First Lady of Song and the Queen of Jazz. She DEFINITELY is a QUEEN!! She won many awards and honorary degrees in her lifetime, including 13 Grammys!
She is also considered to be a master of a singing technique called scat--it's where the singer vocally improvises on made up syllables. Scat can be used to imitate instruments, quote familiar melodies, and also, just make funny sounds! Ella's scatting abilities were off the charts! She could create some extremely complex improvisations! Listen to her wail in these historic recordings.

In this recording, I love how she lets the audience know she is not done yet!! Do you recognize the melody she quotes through her scatting at the end?

Hello, everyone! Please remember the deadline for your Choir Quiz and your Choir Officer Application is TOMORROW. Let's do a cutoff of 9pm so I can go to sleep at a reasonable hour!
Having trouble accessing youtube videos through our website? Well, here are some other ways you can watch valuable music recordings! This is a link to a list of musicals available for streaming through Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Broadway HD. I strongly recommend Shrek The Musical, Carousel, Fiddler on the Roof, and Kiss Me Kate! All great shows, and very different from each other. Many of you may not have Broadway HD, but if you decide to get it or take advantage of the free trial--like I plan to--I recommend The King and I. It is beautiful, and a classic! I plan to watch An American in Paris, because it incorporates ballet, which I love to watch as well.

For those of you that have had success with our Youtube videos, scroll down to watch a scene from Hello Dolly with Barbara Streisand. Streisand is considered Broadway royalty, and she is a distinguished actress and musician who has won multiple Tonies, Grammys, Oscars, Academy Awards, Emmys, and Golden Globes. This movie musical is coming to Disney Plus on May 22nd, but you can watch her sing Don't Rain on My Parade in Funny Girl for FREE through Crackle. Just create a free account on your computer or download the app on your firestick and you're good to go! Fun fact--scenes from this movie musical are featured in the Disney movie Wall-E. Wall-E loves Hello Dolly--you will too!

I discovered this really cool ear training assessment and I think you will enjoy it. They call it a tone-deafness test, but it really is not that. It is more about hearing intervals and, when it gets more tricky, about hearing center of pitch. You should try it out by clicking the image below. Let me know how you score!
Be warned: It abruptly escalates to pretty difficult about halfway through.

We learned that Angleton has been recognized for being one of the best communities for Fine Arts. Thank YOU for being part of something special. Thank you for your tireless efforts you give to Choir (and to band, Alivea and McKaylee!!!).

How are all of your assignments going in all your classes? I hope it is not too overwhelming. For Choir, we are only asking that you check this website, fill out the Choir Quiz once a week, and try to say hi to us on Zoom at some point!
Well, today is a big day for Angleton HS Choir. As you know, Mrs. Perez and I rely heavily on student officers to help our Choir program thrive. Officers work HARD, but I feel strongly that officers with heart in the program find it rewarding to be a leader in Choir. WE NEED YOUR HELP. If you have ever thought about wanting to "step it up" in Choir, now is your chance. PLEASE do not feel like running for office is not for you - IT IS FOR YOU! Please do not think that other people are the leaders - YOU ARE THE LEADER IF YOU WANT TO BE! We need new officers, new leaders, and new voices as Choir officers. Please look over the Choir Officer Handbook (attachment below) and think about this. The deadline for filling out the application (attachment for this is also below) is this Friday by 9pm. Be bold. Be brave. Be awesome.
You can start campaigning next week by sending me things to post on this website.

From Mrs. Perez: This piece is another one of my favorites that I learned in college. It is by Latvian composer Eriks Esenvalds, and it tells the story of men on a ship, struck by the wonder of the Northern Lights in the sky. It combines Latvian and English text, and Esenvalds incorporates water glasses and handbells to create a very other-worldly sound. You can see some of the members of the choir holding the water glasses, and each of them are shaped differently, and hold different amounts of water so that they can each create a specific pitch. When our choir at SFA performed this, I got to play the water glass that was pitched to an A! It was so fun. I had to dip my finger in the water, then apply just the right pressure to the rim of the glass in a circular motion. I also got to play a handbell--I think it was C. Yes, I felt very special!!
There is a recording that I think is slightly more beautiful on youtube by State Choir LATVIJA, but this recording shows how they play the water glasses and handbells, and they really make it part of the performance, which I think is important.

Hello!
It is a new week and we have a new Choir Quiz. This is your grade for your Choir/piano class(es). Get this completed!
Tomorrow I will be posting a link to apply to run for Choir officer positions. WE NEED YOUR HELP - the Choir program does not function without student leadership. Start thinking about what you can do to help. I encourage you to run for multiple officer positions if you want to be a leader. We will do campaigning on this website and I will give you more information on that later.

Last week one of your quiz questions was "what is your favorite song you have ever sang in Choir?" It was amazing that almost everyone had a different answer! It was kind of a throwback hodge-podge of answers and I loved seeing which pieces you were drawn to. A couple of you seniors answered Morten Lauridsen's "Dirait-on". Mixed Choir performed that at UIL several years back - I guess when the current seniors were freshmen. I have not thought about that piece in a while and it was fun remembering it. It actually is from a cycle of songs called Les Chansons des Roses (Songs about Roses). The first four songs, or movements, are a cappella. The final movement, Dirait-on, is the only one that is accompanied. It really is a beautiful set of songs. I encourage you to listen to them all (if you plan to take a nap this afternoon, this is a great way to help that cause!!!) but if you want to listen to Dirait-on first, scroll to 12:30-ish.
From Mrs. Perez: So the other day on Zoom we were talking about frogs and how cute they are. Then, last night, I saw this little guy chilling on the cover of my grill, so I thought I would share. Look how sweet he looks!! I love his bright green color. :)
Then when I opened my coloring app, I found a pretty one of some frogs. The best thing about this app is watching the sped up video of how you colored it after you're done! It's fun. :)
If we haven't seen you on Zoom yet, know that we miss you and would love to see you there soon!

Hello, everyone! I want to thank you. Almost everyone in Choir and piano are reaching out to Mrs. Perez and me. Almost everyone is doing our small assignments weekly. I miss you all and hope to hear from more of you on Zoom next week. If you have NOT joined us, know that we keep it simple. We just talk. Subjects have been chickens, horror movies, shopping, cooking, puzzles, siblings, etc. I also hope you are enjoying this website. It continues to be a way that I feel like I'm "teaching" that is in the style of my randomness you all know. I love that for us.
From Mia:
To my favorite men’s choir: I stumbled across this video of y’all rehearsing one of my favorites from this year and it made me so happy! I miss seeing you boys everyday. Hearing your voices always made my day. I’m so glad I got so sit in on rehearsals every once and a while. I loved watching y’all work so hard and seeing the progress you made in everyday. I was so excited to hear you boys at contest. I know you would’ve been incredible. Regardless, I love you guys so much and I hope you’re still singing during this time! I miss y’all!!!

Who doesn't love a high note? Kate Lott in Voctave has all the high notes. All of them. Every one of them.

Hello!
I got an email from the company that got audio and video recordings of the FABULOUS Angleton High School Treble Choir performance at TMEA Convention. Because of Covid-19, they are running a little behind with their shipments but they are currently working on our orders. They have given us a deadline of two weeks. If you have not gotten ordered your CDs and/or DVDs from our performance, please do so quickly! Again, if you miss the deadline of two weeks from now, you will not be able to order anymore.
Here is the link to order: http://www.markcustom.com/MarkCustom_New/Menu2_ViewAlbum.asp?CDNum=55945-MCD
Side note – I got my recordings and it made me very happy. You guys are so good.
A friend of mind posted the video below on Facebook. I love that you can watch the hands play while watching the visual of what is about to happen. Super cool.
I miss you all.

Hey you guys, it's Mrs. Perez! This is a recording of a beautiful choral piece that I sang in college. To this day, it is one of my absolute favorite choral works. It is Agnus Dei by Samuel Barber, and what is really cool about this piece is that Barber originally wrote this music for string instruments, and titled it Adagio for Strings. But Barber also wrote a lot of vocal music, so he set the same music for voices to the Latin Agnus Dei text. This recording is of the professional a cappella group, Voces 8. They are AMAZING!!!
From Jakob: I found this arrangement of Over the Rainbow and it just brought everything wrong with the world to the right place. I hope it relaxes others as well.
I highly encourage you to check out the Junior High page today, also! Mrs. Crawford shared a series of videos of performances she is in. It's a game to find her in each scene or performance. I watched them all and had a blast looking for her!!!

Bonjour! Today is the last day to get your Choir Quiz done before the weekend. We would appreciate if you make that happen. It was so nice to hear from so many people on Zoom this week. We got a chance to talk to MANY more of you this week than last week. Hearing from you, even when it's, "I've not been doing any thing and I'm tired" makes me happy.
Who is your favorite singer? It is hard for me to come up with just one name, but today it is Audra McDonald. She is fantastic. I saw her on Broadway the night before she won her Tony Award for George Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess".
Trivia Time: Audra has won more Tony Awards for acting than any other person in history. She's also in the only person to ever win all four acting categories (leading in a play, supporting in a play, leading in a musical, and supporting in a musical).
Take the time to watch these videos of her. You will not regret. There are some funny videos of her singing on evening talk shows, but I will not post those.

Hey you guys, it's Mrs. Perez!! In this last video, you can see Audra McDonald in one of her Tony winning roles! In this play, called Masterclass, Audra McDonald plays Sharon, one of the many students who come to learn from the renowned opera singer, Maria Callas, who is played by actress Zoe Caldwell, in a vocal masterclass. The play focuses on the personality and brilliance of Maria Callas, and features excerpts of beautiful vocal music. If you skip to 17:54, you can see Audra McDonald's stunning performance!

Hi, you guys! Did you do the Choir quiz and the super fun Kahoot yet? Do that! And also - I was DEVISTATED when I learned that I am no longer in first place in the Kahoot game!!!
Here's a couple video presents for you! One for you Choir folks and one for you piano folks. If you are in both classes, Sister Mary Clarence and I say, "You're welcome!"

Howdy! If you have not yet done your Choir Quiz, make sure you get that done today! We will be making calls/emails/reminds tomorrow to ensure you are okay and to help motivate you to do the right thing! Click the button below!
Our Brianna is an amazing person. If you have forgotten, she is our Events Coordinator Officer. Events are obviously difficult now so she has taken it upon herself to help with communication and outreach. I highly encourage you to participate in what she is organizing - what a beautiful idea. This doesn't even have to be a Choir exclusive thing. Get your siblings involved, too!
Yesterday we were talking on Zoom about country music and that led us to talking about banjos (if you have not joined us on Zoom, we like to keep it random). A couple of years ago at an ACDA convention, Mrs. Perez and I stumbled upon a banjo museum. Random. Curious. Awesome.

I know a few of you like to get a bunch of letterman patches. Even though all UIL events are canceled for the rest of the year, you can still get a patch for TSSEC if you qualified. Click the link below to purchase.

Hello! Welcome to a new week of online learning!
Just a reminder, there are 3 assignments for Choir each week:
1. Check the website daily. Watch the videos (there are normally one or two videos each day) and read the content.
2. Fill out the weekly google form attached in the website. I attach the same "Choir Quiz" each day of the week. You only need to complete it once each week.
3. Visit us on Zoom. I understand internet struggles are real... Believe me, I know. Just ask any of our Zoom regulars. They have heard me sound like a robot many times. If you can not get on Zoom, just send me an email letting me know why. The contact with you is what is most important with me!

This is a really neat video of West End performers singing Do You Hear the People Sing from the musical Les Miserables. West End is kind of like the Broadway of London, so all of their British accents are totally real! There's a movie version of Les Miserables--have you seen it? You can rent it on Amazon if you haven't!
Here is a throwback video of the ULM Choir performing a piece that tells the biblical story of Saul. Dr. Chandler is conducting! There's a familiar face in the Choir, too. SPOILER ALERT: it's me when I still dyed my hair... Also the girl standing to my right (performer's right) was Miss Louisiana and made it to top three in the Miss America Pageant.

Good morning Choir Family!!
It's me, Mrs. Perez. I just wanted to say thank you so much for my birthday video!! It was so sweet and thoughtful. I loved it!! You guys are the best. It really made my day extra special. I love you all!!

Here are some pictures of my birthday treats!! My cake was strawberry, with a layer of fresh strawberries in the middle, covered in strawberry icing, sprinkles, and a strawberry garnish. (That felt straight out of The Great British Baking Show while I was typing it!) And for dinner, beef fajitas, sausage, cream cheese jalapenos wrapped in bacon, and potato salad. Delish! Oh, and I have already finished one book on my new Kindle!! :)
This is one of Katie's Choral favorites! It is one of my favorite Christmas songs, too!!! I love this!

Mrs. Perez's BIRTHDAY
It's my birthday today and I'm doing my best to make it a great day even though we are stuck at home! Here is a picture of me enjoying my birthday present--something I've wanted for a long time--a Kindle! I'm a book nerd, if you didn't know, so this is a really great gift for me. Also, my husband is going to bake me a strawberry cake with sprinkles (my favorite) and grill fajitas for dinner! I know, I'm getting pampered.
So we know Mrs. Perez got a cool new birthday present and will have delicious birthday cake.
What SHE does not know is you guys got her a present too!!! She will see it first on this website, too!
Happiest of Birthdays, Mrs. Perez. Thank you for being part of our family.

Happy Thursday!!!
If you do not follow Houston Grand Opera on Facebook and/or Instagram, I TOTALLY suggest that that you do!!! I really respect some of the interesting things they have been posting since their doors have been closed. Many of the performing artists (the opera singers and orchestra members) are posting videos. They are sharing stories of the costume builders making protective masks instead of ball gowns. It is super cool.
Please know that the Google Form I have been posting is your first grade for the 4th grading period. If you have not yet done so, please click the link below. If you have struggles, email me or send me a Remind message.

SET YOUR DVR!!!! The Disney Family Singalong is on abc tonight!!! I will be singing all the songs.
This video was created by The Piano guys, a musical group made up of musicians, marketing experts, and studio engineers who want to positively impact the world through music videos. The concept behind this video was to take 5 musical themes by Baroque composer J.S. Bach, and mash them up with "I Want You Back" by 70's group, the Jackson 5. They used musical concepts and instruments from both time periods and combined them in really unique, cool ways! Check out their video description for more details.

So I stumbled upon a website that finds anagrams of your name. How fun!!! wordplays.com/anagrammer
Some of my name anagrams:
Roast Twenty
Totter Yawns
Tawny Otters

Hello! Join us on Zoom today from 11-noon! It's a good way to stay in touch with your Choir family with everything that is going on.
Did you see the important information that Angleton ISD posted on their website and on social media? There is lots to read about grading and senior information pertaining to everything going on. I posted on this website yesterday about assignments and grading with Choir. Scroll down to see that if you did not read it yet. Also, the link to your weekly Choir quiz is here:

It may not be your favorite, but my favorite Choir thing is sight-reading!!! Seriously. I love it. It is like a puzzle. It takes concentration, effort, and time. I made this audio for you all with some sol-fege intervallic challenges. There are four - how many can you get? Warning - I do not wait long to give the answers so you have to think fast!!! With everything going on, this will be good practice for you.
With everything going on, I found this video to be sweet and "music nerd" interesting. While you enjoy... ANOTHER CHALLENGE!!! I found several rhythm and pitch errors in what is written out verses what they are actually singing. Can you recognize any discrepancies?

Happy Monday! I hope you had a fantastic Easter with your family. Did you get a chance to watch Jesus Christ, Superstar last night? I thoroughly enjoyed it. "Everything's Alright" is one of my favorite showtunes. We have never had anyone sing it in the Broadway Show... Maybe next year.
This week we will officially start graded assignments with Choir. We will be consistent from week to week in that your assignments will always be the following:
1. Check this website daily.
2. Meet with us on Zoom at least once a week.
3. Fill out the weekly Google Form provided on this website (there will always be paper copies of this form at the school if you are unable to complete that digitally).
DO NOT STRESS OVER THESE ASSIGNMENTS! Choir should be your fun safe-place and something that brings you joy - not something that adds to your stress. If you are struggling with completeting our assignments, LET ME KNOW. Send me an email or a remind and we can talk about how to make this all work for you. We want to continue to ensure that everyone continues to get the grades they want in Choir. This should be easy for you.
Click the button below for this weeks Google Form (I am going to call them quizzes). Please fill this out and submit. Don't forget your name!!!

I like sharing an array of music with you on this website. I respect almost all vocal music and love researching new things to listen to. Two things for you to listen to today:
1. A few years back one of the All State pieces was something I had never heard. It is an exciting piece that is so layered with different rhythms and musical themes that it almost becomes an anxious sound. Listen to Chariots below. Do know that even though it sounds like they are saying "sausages" at one point, they are not.
2. This is a scene from Act I of The Barber of Seville by Classical Italian composer, Rossini. In it, the leading lady Rosina sings "Una voce poco fa", or "A voice a little while ago" as she writes a letter to a count who serenaded her in disguise. This aria is known as a cavatina, which is an Italian word used to describe the first aria a character sings in the opera. Rosina uses her cavatina to sing amazing melismas (that's where you sing many many notes on one word or syllable). And of course, stunning high notes. Check out the gorgeous lyric (that means her voice is melodious) coloratura (that means she can do amazing melismas) MEZZO soprano, Joyce DiDonato singing this famous aria!

Happy Easter to all of you and your families!!! I know you will find the time to be with the ones you love. Make sure to call your relatives that you are unable to see in person! Also, don't eat all your chocolate at once - save some for later!!!
I thought this video of last year's All State Treble Choir would be appropriate for today. And your ears are not playing tricks on you - the second soloist is in fact Nidia (did you know she did that???)!
Here is a picture of the easter eggs I dyed. Super fun, and reminded me of when I used to dye eggs with my mom as a kid. Tomorrow morning, I will also be making these pancakes that I found on Pinterest. - Mrs. Perez
Hannah H. found the TikTok below. It's funny because it's true...
If you are needing paper copies of assignments (like if you are a person that cannot access google classroom at home), here's how you do it:

Besides schoolwork, how have you been spending your time?
Just about everyone in my family has gotten back on the DrawSomething App (remember that one???). Besides phone calls and FaceTime, its a way we are staying in touch. When we get together for holidays, card games and board games are something we look forward to, so keeping in touch with this app is pretty fun. I am pretty rotten at it, but I was especially proud of this drawing I made:

I've also been enjoying the reruns of significant Saints games on tv. Since athletic events are not happening live right now, stations are taking to broadcasting games of the past. I've been able to watch the Saints twice this week! Who Dat?!!!
As you know, I am from Louisiana and am so fond of the culture, personality, smells, and FOOD. New Orleans is my favorite place in the whole world. These times now remind me of Louisiana during/after Hurricane Katrina. Schools closed. Contact with family extremely limited. Daily uncertainty. Because I was living in Louisiana during Katrina (and then almost immediately after that, Hurricane Rita), the fear and the problematic aftermath was very real and very personal to me.
The difference now with Covid19 is simple - WE HAVE THE POWER TO TRY TO HELP MAKE THIS SITUATION BETTER. Stay home. Practice social distancing. Be smart to save lives.

Since it is the weekend, you might find time to watch a more lengthy Youtube video. The link below is a pretty great stage production of Beauty and the Beast that I stumbled upon in my You-Tube scrolling. I thought it was pretty cool since Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney movie, and I have always wanted to see it on stage. There is a live orchestra playing all the music, and the costumes are beautiful. Really guys--this production is no joke! The young woman playing Belle is quite a good actress and has a lovely voice! Watch for Mrs. Potts during the ballroom scene singing the title song--she was enjoying her spotlight!

Hello!!!
Today I want to share two videos with you. They are both choral pieces of the 20th/21st centuries, but they are DRASTICALLY different.
The first is a pop song you know set in the style of a Renaissance Madrigal. It is meant to be funny, but it is incredibly clever how appropriate the style of the time period is. Maybe a possibility for Renaissance Festival with Encore Singers next year?
The second video is of an aleatoric piece that I love. Aleatoric music, like Puisque Tout Passe, is chance music. There is a layout of what should happen, but the performers have many liberties to make the music unique and different each time it is performed. This particular piece does not even use the staff - if you look closely, it charts out intervals. For instance, the beginning of the song is divided into 16 voice parts that come in one at a time, but it is notated that each voice part sings one step lower than the previous voice part. I sang this piece in college and it is incredibly difficult. See if you can follow along to the music!

HELLO to the my favorite people in the whole world!
Like I said before and like you've probably heard from other teachers, next week we will begin grading assignments. You will have three assignments from Choir each week. They will be:
1. Check this website daily.
2. Meet with us on Zoom at least once a week.
3. Fill out the weekly google form that you will find on this website. I will post that link starting on Monday. Do know that there will be questions on the form/quiz about the content on the website.
I heard that people are putting up their Christmas decorations during this epidemic. I decided to do a Christmas puzzle and pulled out my Christmas song piano book. I still might put up my Christmas tree... It might sound crazy but it makes me happy.

A note from Paige: Hii !! I know I haven’t got around to checking in yet, but i’m alive and well! Me and my family are all safe and healthy. We’ve all been inside driving each other crazy haha. I miss school and just having a schedule, but in the mean time, if you’d like to show the choir my new hair i’m cool with it Miss you guys !!
A reminder from Angleton ISD and Indiana Jones:

I appreciate Mia letting me know that these specialized Bingo cards are a trending thing right now. I appreciate more that Nicholas Howell (former Choir president and superstar on our Choir wall of fame) made this for us. It's real. It also made me think that we could totally play Bingo on Zoom. Charades, too.
From Mrs. Perez: Hey you guys! Here is a recording of me playing a nocturne by Polish composer Frederic Chopin. Chopin was a Romantic period composer and virtuoso pianist. He has always been one of my favorites! His music is so expressive and sensitive, and his life was very interesting--I enjoyed learning about him in college and I wrote my first collegiate research paper about his life and compositional style. I highly encourage you to look him up on Google and Youtube! This is a very accessible arrangement of his Nocturne in E-flat Major from Opus nine. I am including photos of the sheet music, for any of you piano kids that are just looking for something to play at home. I am also sharing a photo of a brief description of how to read the finger numbers in the music for any of you choir kids who might want to try learning it!

I appreciate all of you that are using your time to check this website each day. We are working hard to bring you interesting and fun material while we are not at school.
One of the more prominent names in Choral music currently is Eric Whitacre (many of you have heard of him and a bunch of you have sung some of his music... Seal Lullaby...). The video below is what I think is my favorite piece of his, Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine. You can hear sounds of airplanes and flying in the composition. You can feel the sense of frustration and excitement. You can hear hints of the style of a Renaissance madrigal from the time daVinci lived. It really is a fantastic piece of music and, in this video, it is sung by a fantastic Choir. Headphones encouraged.

We were killing time on Zoom yesterday morning talking about origami, the Japanese art of folding paper. My day-by-day calendar this year is a fold-a-day situation, and I was joking that I was failing at yesterday's Flower Tato (???) challenge. Jasmine chimed in to proudly let us know that she is an expert on cute little oragami crabs, so I asked her to share with all of us.
I DID IT (but I think mine is upside down...)!!!

Happy Monday! We are back on Zoom today at 11am. The password is 675593.
Soon the district will start counting grades for all classes (not just AP and Dual). I will not be changing things up when that happens - this website and Zoom will still be your sources for Choir content. Along with theory activities, we will be doing singing assignments... be ready for that!
Luca let me know that after watching the video posted of the Houston Chamber Choir, he learned that his mother was in the Houston Symphony Chorus when pregnant for him!!! No wonder Luca is such a great singer!!!
Watch this video of the famous quartet from Rigoletto. It is by far my favorite moment in opera and this recording is quite special. Pavarotti (you probably have heard of him) is one of the most successful tenors who ever lived. Joan Sutherland, the soprano in the video is equally impressive in success. Fun fact about her: she is 6'2''!!! When you listen, try to pick out all four voice parts: soprano (the blonde), mezzo-soprano (the brunette), tenor (Pavorotti!!!), and bass (the guy dressed as the elderly man). To read a short synopsis of the opera, click this link:

Are you all aware that the Houston Chamber Choir recently won a Grammy? Choral music is powerful and this group is awesome. Check out this video.
So in some of my spare time, I have been puzzling. It's one of my favorite pastimes. I recently read that puzzling is a healthy hobby because it requires you to focus on one small task with you whole brain - I personally find it relieves stress. I love to shop for puzzles on Amazon, and before most were sold out, I stumbled upon a cool F*R*I*E*N*D*S puzzle. I bought it immediately and then Amazon recommended a Lego set that I got also. Here are the finished products (I included a picture of the Central Perk set for reference).

Listen to what experts are saying - if you must go out, wear a mask!!! This is all temporary but you have to follow the rules for now. We love you all! See you tomorrow on Zoom at 11am!

Hello!!! Have you been following the news? Now, more than ever, it is important for you to stay current with what is going on in our world. Read the newspaper. Turn on a reliable news station instead of watching Netflix. It's important, guys.
A sweet message from Alexxus - Everyone find this time to work on yourself and enjoy your families. Be blessed. =-)

This is so cool (I had forgotten about this until Mrs. Perez shared with me). The Google doodle a while back was a way for you to create your own fugue in the style of Bach. Try it out! Also, see the video below that kind of explains what a fugue is and how it works.

And finally, the answer to the puppy hide and seek game. They are sneaky!!! Have a good day!!!

I hope you have been enjoying the beautiful weather we have had all week. It makes things much more tolerable when you can go outside and enjoy a beautiful day.
Everyone: If you have not yet completed the Google Form from yesterday, please do that NOW. Also, we will be back on Zoom Monday to talk more randomness (no more scary movie talk!!!).
Officers: Are you still stepping it up and being leaders in every way you can? I know things are very different now than earlier in the year, but just because we aren't at school does not mean that people aren't looking up to you, relying on you, and wanting to hear from you. Have y'all had a virtual meeting since this crisis broke out? Have y'all discussed what you can do to HELP? Make me proud.
I got a chance to talk to Mrs. Carpenter the other day. She sends her love and wanted me to share this video with you all!!!

Another great thing: enjoy this clip of Ana doing what she does best - SINGING!!!
Okay, now time for a game!!! Wolfgang, Tito and I were playing hide and seek. See if you can find both the pups in this picture. Answers tomorrow!!!

I hope you all have a great day! Please continue sending me content for this website - it's way more fun when we all contribute.

Hello, everyone! Two action items for you guys today. Do both of the following:
1. The district is wanting feedback on what you guys are doing with your remote learning. Please fill out the Google Form in the link below to let us know what you are doing with Choir.
docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfB-HTLzgJAXoOH7kmkfKzyRD530iV2STSI6a4h_D8XsSFaBQ/viewform?usp=sf_link
2. We are meeting on Zoom every Monday-Thursday from 11-noon. Please make it a priority to at least "check-in". You do not need to stay the whole hour - just touching base for a few minutes is fine. Or you can chitchat with us the whole time!!!

My Facebook popped up with a memory. Ten years ago today I was able to view our campus while it was still under construction (I got to wear a cool hard hat!!!). Check out what our room looked like during the process. The trophy shelf and sound panels were not there, the windows in my office were not in, and there was this big pile of drywall in the middle of the room (I do not know what that was for as all of our walls are brick). I miss being in this room!

I had the privilege to hear this performance of "Unclouded Day" live at the TMEA convention. I sat with Nidia, Mia's family, Mr. Smedley, and our superintendent. I loved working on this song back in the fall and now it seems so relevant. Also, there's something funny below that you KNOW is true...

So today would have been the day we went to UIL Concert and Sight Reading. I am kind of bummed - UIL is my favorite thing we do all year. I love the stress, the successes, but most importantly, making beautiful Choral music. I know you all would have dominated. You are so smart, driven, and talented. Here are the recordings (with feedback from our Mark of Excellence adjudicator) and comment sheets from last year.
From Mrs. Perez to Prelude:
Ladies, I have told you before what a stunning choral sound you make. I love the UIL experience, and I am disappointed we were robbed of that this year, because I know that you would have given a beautiful performance, and I am confident that we would have come home with a trophy. Sally Schott, former TMEA president and choral queen was one of your judges at festival last year, and she would have been your judge AGAIN! I know she would have been blown away by the progression of this ensemble. Still, I am grateful for the preparation process that helped us grow as musicians and bond as family. I am SO PROUD of your hard work. It has made you a more disciplined, mature, and artistic choir, and prepared you to be that much more amazing for years to come. I love you all!!!
Who could forget Prelude for getting SWEEPSTAKES at the Shadow Creek Choral Festival last year?!!! The incredible former TMEA president, Sally Schott, was very impressed by their gorgeous tone! The best part was going to Freebirds after. I miss Mexican food...

And finally, here's a video of THE Renee Fleming giving a masterclass lesson to a student at Julliard. Fun Renee Fleming story: A couple years ago she gave a recital in Houston (I have a signed poster in my office from that recital). Her encore was "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady. Renee invited the audience to sing along and the lady next to me started SANGIN'!!! It was gorgeous. I leaned in and whispered to her that she sounds really good and she proudly said "Thank you." I learned the following day that she too was an opera singer... and was at the time the lead in Elixir of Love at Houston Grand Opera. I guess me telling her she sounds good was quite the understatement...

Hello! Be on the risers WITH YOUR BINDER before the bell rings!!!
I stumbled upon a cool website that allows you to do some sight reading practice online. Things I like: you can adjust the voicing, difficulty, keys, and time signatures; you do not need to register; and it is super quick to get started. This is a great way to stay fresh with your music literacy skills. I urge you to give it a try today. I found it kind of fun!!!

Good morning guys! Or afternoon, depending on how late you slept today! It's Mrs. Perez here, and I'm doing a little piano practicing today. With all this time at home, I guess I have no excuse not to practice right? And yet, what I've been doing the most is watching Survivor on Hulu and That's So Raven on Disney plus. What about you guys? Are you kicking back today and pressing play once again on your favorite Netflix show? Or are you getting a little stir-crazy? Have you completely lost all sense of time? On that note, here are some memes that truly resonate with where we are right now.
It's okay guys, hang in there!! Try to make the most of this new normal. It's great if you find productive things to do, like practicing piano, singing, or exercising, or cooking or cleaning, but it's also okay to let yourself be lazy sometimes too.
Aubrey sure is doing her best to beat the boredom! Check out the crazy make-over she gave her sister, Olivia!

I know I have really been missing hearing you guys sing! Then Mr. Stewart saved the day and shared this recording! Check it out--it's Chisom singing Location by Khalid!
Happy Sunday guys! Keep sending in your videos, photos, and other things you want to share! Talk to you again tomorrow!!

Hello, everyone! Today is another beautiful day (we have been having a lot of those, haven't we???)!
If you are interested in getting a CD, DVD, or mp3 files of the Angleton HS Treble Choir performance at TMEA Convention, please click the link below. If you want, you can also get recordings of the All State ensembles and of your friends at Pace HS, too!
www.MarkCustom.com
Some teachers should be starting Zoom "office hours" next week. Choir was on the list of classes so it looks like we will be able to do that. We are here for you to answer all of your singing questions! I think I have it figured out and I think the district will share links with you. Wish me luck on making that happen!!!
I have learned more than ever that all my dogs do is sleep. Many of you know Tito, but I do not think any of you have met Wolfgang. I've had him for 11 years now. I got him from a rescue shelter in Louisiana when he was one month old. He's half rat-terrier and (I think) half schnauzer. And he definitely is a pretty awesome dog.

Hey you guys, it's Mrs. Perez! Here is a video of my dog Nala. She is a rescue dog that I adopted as a puppy four years ago, and her vet records say she is a German shepherd mix. I think she is really a black mouth cur. Look it up--it's an interesting dog breed! She is very sweet, and very smart too. She sleeps a lot like Mr. Stewart's dogs too, but she also loooooves being outside. Here is a video of a few of her tricks she can do! She also does lay-down, and roll-over (sometimes)!
Here is a recording of a really awesome experience I had during grad school at Stephen F. Austin State University. Our Choir, the SFA A Cappella Choir, joined with a local church choir to record some sacred music in St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Houston. We traveled there from Nacogdoches because their organ in that church is beautiful and HUGE!! It was truly awesome to stand with my Choir family at the time and sing in that amazing space with that gigantic instrument! It is definitely something I will always remember.

And lastly, watch this cool (and kind of gross video) of what your vocal track is doing when you sing. It's pretty fascinating! We hope you have a great day!
Friday, March 27th, 2020
Hooray, it's Friday! Today I plan on doing some spring cleaning because my house is getting a little sloppy. And I have a closet or two that has needed some help for a while now. I know you're probably really enjoying the comforts of home, but do you ever find yourself missing the Choir room? I know I have been! Here are some photos of good times we have had this year in our Choir home!
Well, Grant sure hasn't been bored at home! He has rescued a squirrel from his chimney and set it free! Check out the photo evidence below!
Here's some more toilet paper humor in case you haven't had enough! If you don't know who Carol Burnett is, look her up! She is an actress, singer, writer, and comedian. She was also the first woman to host her own comedy variety show! Here is a skit from that show that's totally relevant right now.
I hope you guys have a great day!! Keep washing those hands!
Thursday, March 26th, 2020
Well it's a beautiful Thursday guys! I'm doing my best to soak in the sunshine when I can, and I hope you are too. I'm sitting on my back porch enjoying a cup of coffee and the flowers that I potted the other day. Nala is having a blast chasing bugs and lizards all over the yard, or barking at any birds that attempt to land in our tree. I hear you guys are catching up on your reading--me too! My "Books to Read" list is finally starting to go down as I chip away at it. I have a reading corner at the front of my house that is a relaxing place to cozy up with a good book. Nala likes to steal it for herself though. It has a lounger right under a window that shows the neighbor's front yard, and she likes to sit there and be on the look-out for squirrels to bark at.
I really love to see you guys having good times with your pets too!! Keep scrolling down to see some more furry fun from Penelope! Are you spending any time at home singing? Mia and Justin are! Watch their video below! Don't forget to stay in touch with your choir people! Make someone's day by sending a text just to say hello. :)
Lots of love,
Mrs. Perez

Wednesday, March 25th, 2020
Happy Wednesday!!! I really have come to enjoy updating on this website daily. It is a constant that I have been missing since I am not at school. I have set up my home office in my dining room (see below). This seat at the table has a particularly lovely view of the magnolia tree outside. It reminds me of Louisiana. Tito and Wolfgang normally nap on the couch in the next room while I work at my computer- they can see me, but they are far enough away that I don't bother them. They aren't used to me being home so much and, frankly, sometimes they act like I am invading their space. They can get way over it.
I hope you are finding productive ways to fill your time! In the google survey I sent on Monday (scroll down and complete that if you have not done it), many of you shared what you have been doing to stay productive. Lots of video games... but it was good to see that you have been doing a lot of reading, exercising, and family bonding, also!!! From the responses I got, it seems that you are missing your Choir friends. Reach out to them!!!
I hope you have a great day. Check out the videos from Aubrey and Mrs. Perez!

From the responses I got, it seems that you are missing your Choir friends. Reach out to them!!!
I hope you have a great day. Check out the videos from Aubrey and Mrs. Perez!
Hey guys!! It's Mrs. Perez here! Check out this adorable baby otter! Would this little guy be considered a flipperling? I think so!

Hello, everyone!!!
For those of you who are musical theater lovers, check out this link to find some opportunities to watch stage productions at home! FYI - the CATS stage production is way better than the movie...

Dr. Chandler (I call her Doc) took time out of her day to send you guys a message. She is so awesome. If you have forgotten, she was supposed to be with us this week to work on some UIL music. Hopefully we will get a chance to work with her next year!!! If you have not met her, you will love her when you do meet her. I attached the flyer and the application for the camp at her university, but if you want me to email those to you, let me know!

Happy Monday, everyone!!!
Please fill out this google form. I would like this information from you. It should take about five minutes and you should be able to do it from your phone.
docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfp4lVaiCYDH_f2zvsYeyt591Z_r7mq8vsbmsNCV60fSDER8A/viewform?usp=sf_link
Miss Gabby is willing to do some remote voice lessons for anyone interested. This will work differently per student depending on your technology abilities. If you are interested (even if you have not been studying with her and might would want to start now that you have some free time) text her. 979-549-7604
I made a jambalaya and finished a puzzle today. I have a training tomorrow about the Zoom app so maybe that will be something we can use soon to do some practicing soon! Please continue emailing me things to share with you all!!! For those of you that have, I am trying to post at least one new thing from you each day! Keep checking back daily for new Choir stuff. Fill out the google form above and see the video from Jakob below!

Hello, everyone!!! I hope you are checking this website daily! Would you do us a favor and reach out to Choir kiddos (high school and junior high) to make sure they know about this communication source? A challenge for you: contact all the people in your Choir Family Line (when was the last time you did that???) to ensure they are doing okay and staying up to date with Choir!!! - Mr. S
A sweet note from Morgan:
I just wanted to say to all of my choir family, please be safe and take caution for yourself and especially for others. I love you all so much and miss you. These times are tough but we must be positive and have hope. Hope for our choir family, and hope for everyone struggling right now. Please be kind, and patient. I know it's hard. But we are strong, together.:))))))

Happy Saturday, everyone!!!
Yesterday I posted the most updated information about the NYC trip. I am so glad that we are trying all we can to postpone and not cancel. If you have complications/conflicts with this date, please contact our travel company (904-819-1820) and me (tonys@angletonisd.net). Emily, our agent, said there is also a possibility of adding people that can attend in July who were unable to go in March. That had not occurred to me but it's kind of cool! f you are interested, give her a call!
I miss you all!!! I hope you have been singing!!! - Mr. Stewart
